As ComicBook.com reports, a site called Nightmare Nostalgia appears to have the inside info about McDonald's bringing back its Halloween Happy Meal buckets.


What are McDonald's Halloween buckets?
Back in 1986, McDonald's started offering its Happy Meal kids meal in cute little Halloween-themed buckets, which can double as a kid's trick-or-treat pail -- if they're not out for maximum candy, that is. Happy Meals usually come in cardboard boxes shaped kind of like little houses, so the buckets were a spook-tacular treat.




What did the original McDonald's Halloween buckets look like?
The three original designs were called McPunk'n, McBoo and McGoblin. All looked like jack-o-lanterns, just with different faces. McPunk'n looks happy, McBoo looks slightly started, and McGoblin looks ... sleepy, but he's probably supposed to look scary.























Ghost and witch McDonald's Halloween buckets
A few years later, McDonald's added white ghost and green witch designs. They all looked pretty happy -- even the supposedly spooky witch. Here they are in an ad from 1990. As the commercial explains, the ghost bucket even glows in the dark. (Don't think too much about how the Chicken McNuggets are busying themselves making sauce, presumably to be used in their own consumption.)






















When did McDonald's stop making Halloween buckets?
Nightmare Nostalgia has a wonderful timeline of the history, if you really want to delve into a fast-food chain's promotional past. (Not knocking you if you do, because I am one of you.) Some of the bigger changes involved a switch to vinyl glow-in-the-dark trick-or-treat bags, called McBoo Bags.
In 1992, the buckets were redesigned to include cookie cutters that popped off the top. That had to be a high-water mark for McDonald's Halloween bucket creativity. Hope somebody got a raise that year.

After that, the pails kept being tweaked, and finally vanished in 2016, going out with a It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, design. So it's got to be time to bring them back, right? Hello? Anybody listening? Ronald? Grimace? Good grief!


What will the new McDonald's Halloween buckets look like?
Halloween fans are surely hoping this is a treat and not a trick. A representative from McDonald's did not respond to repeated requests for comment -- leading me to believe the company really wants to keep this news under wraps, if it's indeed true.

 But the reliable snack-news Instagram account markie_devo posted what appears to be a photo of the new buckets. The buckets look to be the ghost, witch and pumpkin variety, so maybe the ghost will once again glow in the dark. Not sure what is going on with those lids, though. 


























When will the McDonald's Halloween buckets be available?
Nightmare Nostalgia shared what appears to be a leaked calendar page of McDonald's events, listing the Halloween pails as arriving on Oct. 18 and running through Halloween, Oct. 31. It also mentions "Halloween Pails" on Oct. 4. Perhaps that's when the ad campaign will begin and we'll get notice that this is real?
Or when the buckets will ship to restaurants? It's also McRib day, apparently, so sauce it up.

But without confirmation, we can't say for sure that the McDonald's Halloween buckets are returning, just as Linus could never guarantee the arrival of the Great Pumpkin.


Unreleased Halloween buckets we'll never see
According to YouTuber Consumer Time Capsule, there were six proposed Halloween buckets that were never released, including this purr-fect black cat. Whoa, we missed out on some pop-culture goodness here. There's also a wonderful McMummy.






It was leaked yesterday that McDonald's Halloween Pails will be returning on 10/18 (unconfirmed, but where there's smoke, there's fire). Pretty exciting development, but when are we finally going to get the unreleased black cat bucket that was proposed in 1991?!?!

Syrian "Arada" folklore dancers of the "Bab al-Hara" troupe perform while in traditional dress


Singing joyfully to beating drums, Syrian refugees who fled brutal civil war perform traditional "Arada" dances in neighbouring Jordan, honouring their home culture and earning extra income.


Their performances, featuring traditional robes and whirling swords, have become increasingly popular in Jordan for marking festivities like weddings and parties.

"They add an atmosphere of joy to our celebration," said Fahed Shehadeh, who hired the Bab al-Hara dance troupe in the capital Amman to mark the graduation of his two sons from university.

"I am Jordanian but of Syrian origin, and I brought the group because I admire their dancing skills, music, clothes and their songs," said 55-year-old Shehadeh, celebrating with family, friends and neighbours.

Traditionally seen at weddings, the popularity of Arada -- rooted in the Arabic for a "performance" -- has had its songs modified to fit various celebrations.

A troupe typically consists of 10 to 20 dancers, wearing loose-fitting black trousers, white cotton shirts, embroidered vests, white skullcaps and a shawl wrapped around the waist.

Swords and decorative shields are worn, and the dance culminates in members spinning their blades in the air, before engaging in ceremonial fighting.

The troupe leader, Moutaz Boulad, 60, said Arada had grown in popularity in Amman, with daily events in the summer months and several engagements each week in winter.

Boulad, who left Syria in 1988, says the shows have become an important means to earn cash for some of those who fled the war that erupted in 2011.

"Some of the dancers were not good when they first came to us, but they learned from my sons and I in order to improve their financial situation," he said.

Syria's war is estimated to have killed nearly half a million people and displaced millions; more than 6.6 million fled to neighbouring Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon.

Jordan hosts almost 650,000 Syrians registered with the United Nations, but Amman estimates close to 1.3 million Syrians have arrived since 2011.

The UN has said that close to 80 percent of Syrians in Jordan live below the national poverty line, surviving on three dollars per day or less.

Boulad said his dancers came from various professional backgrounds.

"Most dancers have different jobs beside the Arada," Boulad said.

"Some are university students, accountants, restaurant workers, tailors and electricians -- but this is something that gives an amount of money to help cope with life."

For dancers like Ahmed Abu Shadi, 43, who fled Syria in 2013 and works as a plumber, performing the Arada helps him raise his three children.






The income the dancers gain from their performances adds to often meagre salaries from more conventional work


"With plumbing there are days when I work, and days with no customers," he said.

"For Arada, they pay me 15 dinars ($20) every time I go out to dance. Although it is a small amount, it helps in my life."

- 'Identity, heritage' -

Another member, who worked in a medical laboratory and asked for his name to be withheld, fled the Syrian city of Homs in 2018.

The dancing helps add some $300 each month to his regular $700 salary from the laboratory to support his family, while they wait for applications through the UN refugee agency to be processed.

"I have applied for asylum through the UNHCR and hope we can start a new life abroad," he said.

Despite displacement and financial challenges, dancing the Arada remains a key part of Ahmed Abu Shadi's life.






The dance is seen as an important part of Syrian identity, heritage and daily life


"This dance is a very important part of our Syrian identity, heritage, culture and our daily life -- we must preserve and teach it to our children and grandchildren," he said.

"This art is in my blood, I love it, I can't imagine myself, my life without this."

He dreams of one day dancing again on his home soil.

"I will continue to dance wherever I go," he said.

"But of course, I prefer that the situation improves one day so that we can all return to our country, Syria."
